One Night in Tivoli

Pauline

On our September trip we are flying into Rome FCO in the afternoon and driving to Tivoli to spend the night before driving up to Le Marche. I want to see Hadrian's Villa. I think we can visit Villa d'Este in the late afternoon when we arrive and then visit Hadrian's Villa the next day before we do our drive north.

I picked Tivoli because I have long wanted to go there. It is not directly on our way to Le Marche, but it seems to make sense as a stopping point (1 hour drive from the airport). We are staying in a hotel on the edge of the historic center (Palazzo Santori).

Any advice? @jonathan I think you have been there recently.

Yes, we stopped off there for a night on our way back from Ostuni in summer 2013. We, too, visited the Villa d'Este in the late afternoon: highly recommended. But we needed to depart earlyish the next morning, so didn't have time for Hadrian's Villa. The centro storico is well worth a stroll around, but I've temporarily mislaid my journal, so can't remember too many details...

The photo below shows the facade of the VdE in the evening sun, but it's the terraced gardens, and the water features & statuary, which are really spectacular.

We are no longer doing the one night in Tivoli. I have spent the last few days reading about the Roman road Via Flaminia and I realized we can drive most of it from Rome to Le Marche, so instead we are spending the night at Civita Castellana on the way! Then the next day driving to Le Marche we will poke along finding remains of the road.

I will save my Tivoli research for another trip.
