Rentals cars in the Cotswolds

We are planning a trip to London, Liverpool, and then to a town near Tetbury in the Cotswolds. We want to ride the train from Liverpool and pick up a rental car somewhere near Tetbury. Does anyone have a suggestion of the nearest station and rental car pickup?

Check the train schedules with www.thetrainline.com and see where you can get to from Liverpool. Bath is on a main train line and has car rental offices, but they are not near the train station (you could take a taxi). We have rented cars from Bath when traveling to the Cotswolds.

Other options would be Gloucester or Oxford. Probably an hour and a half drive from Oxford to tetbury. Bath or Gloucester are closer.

Claire, how long will you be renting a car for? If budget is a consideration, you might consider renting from a local rental company instead of one of the big chains. Depending on how long of a rental period, it may be worth it to train to a location further from your village to pick up your car and then drive to your village.

We rented vans in Gloucester from 1st Call Auto Rentals twice. http://www.1stcallautorentals.co.uk/ (I think Pauline rented from them at one point too.) They even picked us up at the Gloucester station.

More recently we've been renting from Evesham Self-Drive, which is just outside the northern Cotswolds, about fifteen minutes from Chipping Campden. There's a station in Evesham. The rental company is a few miles outside Evesham, and I think they would have a small charge to pick you up at the station.

You could easily get to Gloucester or Evesham from London... not so sure what would be involved to get to either place from Liverpool.

We rented from 1st Call on your advice Kathy when we came here in 2010. We had planned to stay for 5 months and just rented from them. Eventually we bought a car when we realized we were staying longer. They offered good insurance with a smaller deductible than the larger companies.

They brought the car to Nailsworth where we were staying and picked it up from the house when we were finished with it. We had a VW Golf, but the VW Polo was cheaper and might have been a better option.
