Tree at Sycamore Gap Felled

There is a famous tree at Sycamore Gap along Hadrian’s Wall. Yesterday it was cut down in the night during Storm Agnes. Such pointless vandalism.

Indeed utterly appalling. As if our natural surroundings are not suffering enough from all the "regular" sins of progress.
In some way I am hoping that the person who did this turns out to be seriously mentally deranged, and that this wasn't just an act of sheer vandalism. At least there might be a bit of comfort in that, as opposed to it being just another reminder of the senseless evil humans are capable of.
