I've just looked at site for cottage rentals (http://www.english-country-cottages.co.uk/ ) and all their rentals seem to be from Friday to Friday. Is this standard for the UK, or just this company?

Vacation rentals are usually Friday or Saturday start.
That rental looks cute, but is not in a village. And I would want to know its exact location. There are a few rentals here that are on busy roads.

And review my notes about vacation rentals in England http://www.sloweurope.com/vacation-rentals/about/england.php (looks like I need to update those notes). One problem with UK vacation rentals is bed size. Frequently it is a double. And remember that a King here is the same as a US queen. But, since you are tiny, maybe you don't worry about bed size like I do.
