Viterbo, Lazio..Rome area

Northern Lazio is an interesting area and well worth a week. Viterbo, Orvieto (Umbria) and Pitigliano (Tuscany) are all in the area. There are Etruscan tombs, Etruscan pathways, ancient Roman sites to see. Viterbo is probably worth a day or stay longer and use it as a base to see the area.

I once spent five nights in Viterbo and used it as a base to visit neighboring towns by bus: Tarquinia, Tuscania, Caprarola, Bomarzo, Bracciano, and Villa Lante.

Viterbo has an engrossing Medieval quarter and very significant Medieval cathedral. It's definitely worth staying overnight. A real breath of fresh air compared to the hustle and bustle of Rome.
